Lighting the Scene, Honoring the Heroes: How 9/11 Changed Fire & Emergency Response
There are moments in American history that forever change us. September 11, 2001 is one of them.
As we approach the anniversary of 9/11, we remember the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, military personnel and countless other heroes who answered the call that day. We remember those who ran toward danger while others were running away. We remember the families who lost loved ones, the first responders who carried the weight of that day for years afterward, and every American who stepped forward to serve.
Here at Phantom Products, that commitment to service hits close to home. We are a family-owned, American-made company with roots in supporting America’s military and first responders that stretch back generations. Our work has always been about more than building lights. It’s about building equipment for the people we trust to protect us.
Never Forget the Heroes of September 11
The courage displayed by America’s first responders on September 11 remains almost impossible to put into words. Firefighters climbed stairwells carrying heavy equipment while thousands of people evacuated in the opposite direction. Police officers, EMS personnel and other responders entered an environment of extraordinary danger and uncertainty because people needed their help.
That spirit of service did not end on September 11.
It continues every day in fire stations, police departments, military installations, ambulances and emergency response units throughout the country. The men and women who answer those calls deserve equipment designed around one fundamental expectation: it has to work when they need it.
How 9/11 Changed the Conversation About First Responder Safety
September 11 also forced America to take a hard look at how agencies prepare for and respond to large-scale emergencies.
Communication between first responders and incident command remains one of the most critical components of emergency response. Large-scale incidents reinforced the importance of coordination, interoperability, situational awareness and equipment that can perform reliably under extremely difficult conditions.
Visibility is another critical piece of that equation.
Firefighters rarely get to choose the environment in which they work. Smoke, darkness, debris, severe weather, damaged infrastructure and chaotic emergency scenes can dramatically reduce visibility. That’s why dependable vehicle lighting and portable lighting can play such an important role in modern emergency response.
Modern Fire Truck Lighting is About More Than Brightness
Today’s fire apparatus lighting isn’t simply about producing the brightest possible beam.
Effective scene lighting helps responders illuminate work areas, identify hazards, navigate around apparatus and equipment, and establish a safer working environment during nighttime and low-visibility operations.
Modern LED technology has also changed what’s possible. Lighting can be more compact, efficient, durable and purpose-built for demanding environments than the older lighting systems used by previous generations of emergency vehicles.
For departments selecting or upgrading emergency vehicle lighting, durability matters just as much as output. Fire apparatus operates in rain, heat, cold, vibration, dust and environments where equipment can take a beating. A light that performs perfectly in a controlled environment means very little if it fails when conditions become difficult.
Built for the People Who Serve America
That philosophy is deeply connected to the history of Phantom Products.
Our family’s commitment to American service began during World War II, when Julian A. McDermott developed floating water lights designed to help U.S. Navy ships navigate heavily mined waters around Japan. That innovation began a family legacy centered on creating lighting solutions for the people protecting our country.
Generations later, that mission continues.
Phantom is proud to be a family-owned American company, manufacturing lighting right here in the United States. Our military lighting has been developed with input from the people who actually use it in the field. Our products have served military personnel and first responders in environments where reliability isn’t optional.

Honoring Our Military, Veterans & First Responders
For Phantom, patriotism isn’t something we reserve for September 11, Memorial Day or Veterans Day.
It’s part of why we do what we do.
We are proud of the American service members, veterans, firefighters, police officers, EMTs, paramedics and other first responders who have dedicated their lives to protecting others. Many leave their families without knowing exactly what the next call or mission will bring.
Our responsibility is much smaller by comparison – but we take it seriously: build dependable American-made lighting worthy of the people who depend on it.
Whether that’s handheld tactical lighting, vehicular lighting, or equipment lighting designed for demanding environments, the goal remains the same: create equipment people can trust when the situation matters most.
September 11, 2001: We Will Never Forget
Twenty-five years later, the images and stories of September 11 remain with us. But alongside the tragedy is something else worth remembering: extraordinary courage.
We remember the first responders who entered the towers. We remember the service members whose lives and missions would be changed in the years that followed. We remember the Americans who volunteered, donated, served and stood together. And we remember those who never came home.
From everyone here at Phantom, we honor the fallen, the survivors, our veterans, our active-duty service members and every first responder who continues to answer the call.
We will never forget. And we will always be proud to build in America for those who serve America.
